Education & Certification

An advanced diploma program developed under the auspices of EAFPS, formally recognising scholars who have completed a structured and complementary educational program in rhinoplasty. The ERM is a mark of dedication and achievement in one of the most demanding fields of facial plastic surgery.

Program

Requirements

  • Training period – 3 months of dedicated rhinoplasty training, divisible into 1-, 2- or 3-month subperiods, completed within 2 years
  • Training plan – Personalised plan with 1 to 3 tutors from the official ERM list, approved by the ERM Committee before start
  • Documentation – Official ERM-CV submitted before training + signed procedure logbook at conclusion
  • Meeting attendance – At least 1 EAFPS Annual Meeting during the 2-year training period
  • Hands-on course – At least 1 rhinoplasty dissection course under EAFPS auspices
  • Fees – ERM subscription fees paid in full before start of training. Season 25/26: €3,000

Surgical exposure required

  • Primary rhinoplasty – Preservation, structural, or oncological resection
  • Secondary rhinoplasty – Procedures involving rib or auricular cartilage
  • Surgical approaches – Both open and closed
  • Additional – Septoplasty, turbinoplasty, pyriform aperture surgery (supplementary)

Eligibility criteria for scholars

  • Medical background – Completed residency in Otorhinolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery or General Plastic Surgery, certified by national medical boards
  • Membership – Must be a Full or Junior member of EAFPS
  • Non-European scholars – Eligible under same conditions; at least 2 out of 3 training periods must be completed in a European training centre
  • Experience – No age restrictions or prior rhinoplasty experience required; all qualified specialists welcome

Becoming an ERM Training Centre and Tutor

The ERM welcomes new tutors from Europe and abroad who meet the following requirements. All tutors are accredited by the ERM Committee for a preliminary 2-year evaluation period starting in 2025.

  • Membership – Active EAFPS member (tutors outside Europe must also be members of their national facial plastic society under IFFPSS)
  • Surgical volume – Minimum 100 rhinoplasties annually (≥10 per month during ERM periods)
  • Hosting scholars – Agrees to host ERM scholars without fees – max. 2 scholars simultaneously
  • Language – Tutor and scholar must communicate in English (national language optional if agreed)
  • Documentation – Willing to review and sign the procedure logbook at end of program
  • ERM Diploma – Tutors may apply for the ERM diploma themselves (surgical exposure deemed fulfilled)

How to get your ERM certification

Write to the EAFPS Executive Board with your EAFPS affiliation, country, email and phone number.

Select from the official ERM tutor list – get their written acceptance, validated by EAFPS.

3 periods of 1 month each – not necessarily continuous but min. 1 month each.

1 EAFPS Annual Meeting + 1 anatomic dissection course within 2 years maximum.

Once documents validated by EAFPS-EB, pay the ERM fees (€3,000 for season 25/26).

The ERM board will send mandatory forms at the end of each step – complete all to be eligible for the ERM diploma.

The ERM examination

After the ERM Committee has reviewed and approved all signed documents, the scholar becomes eligible for examination. The exam is held annually before the EAFPS Annual Meeting (usually in September).

  • Documentation deadline – Signed procedure logbook must be submitted at least 1 month before the Annual Meeting
  • Attendance – The scholar must be present on-site
  • Exam content – Summary of ERM-CV and procedure logbook, followed by oral questions on rhinoplasty
  • Diploma – ERM diploma awarded on-site during the EAFPS Annual Meeting
