The 40th anniversary of the European Academy of
Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
On Saturday the 3rd of December 1977, the first meeting of the European Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was held in the Royal Society of Medicine in London. The story began when two good friends with passion for education and teaching thought of gathering surgeons with interest in this area of surgery into one group. These were Tony Bull from London and Claus Walter from Dusseldorf (figure). In September 1977 Tony Bull wrote to many European ENT, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgeon saying “as you know, there are an increasing number of surgeons who find that they are particularly interested in facial plastic and head and neck reconstructive aspects of their work. In America, the Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has served well to raise the standards of this branch of surgery and also get those interested together to exchange ideas…. we have looked into forming a similar Academy in Europe…”
It was not a bed of roses! Although they received many letters of support, there were some objections specially from plastic surgeons. One of the main concerns was the use of the word ”Plastic”. However, the meeting was held as “the European Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery”. Thirty surgeons attended a very successful first meeting and the Academy was born (figure). The first Executive Board was formed with Claus Walter from Germany as President, Guy Jost from France as President-Elect, Tony Bull from the UK as Secretary and J. Hutton (UK) as honorary treasurer. A decision was made to hold over the question of the title of the Academy until a later meeting. It followed that the title “Joseph Society” was chosen in tribute to Jacque Joseph, the father of facial plastic surgery in Europe, and was used for few years. Later on the original title was regained and has been used to date.
Programme of the first meeting of the EAFPS
The years have gone by and our Academy has grown into a strong international body with over a thousand members. What started as small venture by a group of friends has proven its worth and we all are indebted to those pioneers. Let’s celebrate this special 40th anniversary of the Academy and look to a bright future!
